How should the provision for Enterprise Learning be managed?

Effective management and co-ordination are essential to the implementation of Enterprise Learning. In particular, schools need to consider their strategic approach towards the delivery of the equivalent of 5 days enterprise entitlement for all students at Key Stage 4. The following notes may provide useful ideas towards an effective approach.

  • In most cases schools may want to ensure that they have appointed a member of the senior management team as a 'champion' for enterprise who has responsibility for ensuring the school makes adequate provision for all pupils.
  • The school should appoint a member of staff with responsibility for the effective co-ordination of enterprise learning activities and resources.
  • The school should develop and produce an Enterprise Learning Policy clearly indicating how it intends providing enterprise learning opportunities and the expected outcomes.
  • Include the provision for Enterprise Learning in the School Development Plan.
  • Conduct an Audit and/or review existing enterprise learning to determine level and scope of provision to match and measure against statutory minimum requirements.
  • Implementation of the strategic approach to Enterprise Learning is greatly enhanced by producing an Enterprise Action Plan providing a clear and methodical approach to identifying strategic and operational objectives supported by agreed time-framed action points.
  • Enterprise Funding, as allocated annually, should be allocated appropriately to support the strategic Enterprise Action Plan.
  • The school should consider the training needs of staff members and allocate time and funding accordingly.
  • Collaboration with other schools, businesses and external organisations can provide effective partnerships enhancing   student Enterprise Learning opportunities.
